When it comes to versatility, herbs are hard to beat. Low maintenance herbs attract pollinators and are super easy to grow. Picking fresh herbs from your backyard is satisfying and they add delicious flavor to your favorite dishes.
The Pacific Northwest (PNW) has a mild climate that is ideal for growing a variety of herbs. Here are some popular herbs that thrive in our region:
- Basil – A warm-season herb that loves sun and well-drained soil.
- Mint – Grows well in moist, shady areas and spreads quickly.
- Thyme – A hardy herb that grows well in full sun and well-drained soil.
- Oregano – Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil; great for Mediterranean dishes.
- Sage – Prefers full sun and well-drained soil; perfect for the PNW’s summer.
- Chives – Tolerates colder temperatures and grows well in partial sun.
- Parsley – Grows well in the cooler spring and fall temperatures of the PNW.
- Rosemary – Prefers full sun and well-drained soil, but may need some protection from freezing winters.
- Lavender – Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, offering a fragrant touch to gardens.
